New Animals

"New Animals"

2005-07

The "New Animal" series looks at the complex relationship between humans and animals. I photographed these creatures in zoos and animal preserves. Although today zoos have a mission to preserve and educate, original zoos cruelly confined wild animals. By digitally erasing the habitats in my photographs, I aim to portray a new environment where the highlighted animal is free. I sample colors from the original environment and use them for the digital backdrop I create. I darken the exposure around some of the animals so they stand out. Using color and composition, the animals in my compositions inhabit a new virtual space independent of humans.

Work from this series is in the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston collection, among others. An artist talk from the solo exhibition of this work at 511 Gallery in Chelsea, NY, is featured on VernissageTV. It has also been published in Frankfurter Rundshchau, HOUSTON, Gulf Coast, Artist Animal, and other publications.
