Luxuriant Forest

"Luxuriant Forest (2021) compares Houston’s wetlands to the tropical rainforest of Madagascar. Inspired by Hurricane Harvey, I hope to show viewers possibilities for hope and change in our own backyard. Houston has seen increased flooding recently and as a result despair for the future. Madagascar has suffered from damaging cyclones, but the rain forest rebounds with the help of fantastical moths, lemurs, and birds. These creatures reforest damaged land through seed dispersal, yet they are increasingly threatened by extinction. This project combines the theory of local scientists with the poetry of art to foreground these ecological concerns.

This single-channel silent looping video is approximately 7 minutes in length, commissioned for "Alatmira: The Primal Urge to Create" exhibition for  Sculpture Month Houston from  October 9 - December 4, 2021 at SITE Gallery
